Who Are We?

IEEE @ UMD is the University of Maryland’s official student branch of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). We are a student-led organization that supports both undergraduate and graduate students, especially those in Electrical and Computer Engineering – but we welcome all students interested in tech, regardless of major.

Our mission is to empower students to achieve more – academically, socially, and professionally – throughout their time at UMD. We do this by organizing a wide range of events, including:

  • Professional Development Events with Recruiters and Alumni
  • Hands-on Technical Workshops
  • Social Events and Community-Building Activities
  • Academic Resources and Mentorship

How Are We Related to IEEE?

We’re affiliated with IEEE, a global organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. IEEE is known for publishing cutting-edge research, organizing international conferences, and setting industry standards across fields such as computing, power systems, robotics, and telecommunications.

IEEE @ UMD is the official student branch of IEEE on campus, recognized by both IEEE and the University of Maryland. While our chapter is student-led and focused on the UMD community, we’re also part of a global professional network.

You do not need to be a paid IEEE member to attend our events or participate in our chapter – activities are free and open to all UMD students. That said, becoming an official IEEE member through ieee.org connects you with exclusive national and international benefits, including:

  • IEEE scholarships and research opportunities
  • Membership in technical societies (e.g., Robotics, Computer, Power & Energy)
  • Access to thousands of IEEE research papers, publications, and journals
  • Discounts on conferences, events, and IEEE certifications
